Let’s be honest. Hosting any type of event is a mix of excitement and exhaustion. On one hand, you get to make memories, catch up on stories, and soak in that quality time you don’t always get. Those moments of laughter around the table, inside jokes, and unplanned heart to heart talks are absolutely priceless.
But on the other hand, hosting can be draining (especially when you’re the one opening up your home). Suddenly, you’re not just family, you’re also the coordinator, the cook, the cleaner, and the one making sure everyone has what they need. It’s easy to feel like the entire success of the gathering is resting on your shoulders. And let’s be real: even when you’re excited to have everyone over, there’s that little voice reminding you how much energy it takes to pull off.
I’ve been there countless time. Just looking around my kitchen thinking about what to serve, mentally juggling seating, food, drinks, and clean up strategy, all while already running on fumes. It’s the kind of situation that can make you second guess if you should host at all. But here’s the thing: it doesn’t have to be overwhelming. With a few smart choices, you can still create cozy, memorable get together’s without completely wearing yourself out.

When my family came into town recently, I knew I wanted to send them off in a nice way before they hit the road. They were checking out of their hotel in the morning, and instead of everyone scattering to grab food separately, I thought, “Why not host a brunch at my house?” Brunch just made sense. It’s casual, flexible, and a perfect way to gather one last time before saying goodbyes.
The only problem? I was tired. Like, really tired. My family and I were all having fun at a water park the day before. My feet were sore and my face a little sun burned. The thought of spending hours in the kitchen prepping an elaborate meal wasn’t happening. But here’s the good news: you don’t have to cook everything yourself to host a beautiful, memorable brunch. I’ll show you exactly how I pulled it off, with restaurant bought food, simple stations, and a cozy setup.

Why Brunch Was the Perfect Choice
Brunch has this a special ability to fit everyone’s schedule. Morning people love it because they don’t have to wait until afternoon to eat, and night owls don’t mind because it’s not too early. It’s the best of both worlds.
In our case, brunch made even more sense because my family was checking out of their hotel that morning. They needed to grab something to eat before their drive, but we all wanted one last chance to sit down together. Dinner would’ve been too late, and breakfast too rushed. Brunch hit that sweet spot.
Another perk? Brunch can be as fancy or as relaxed as you want it to be. You can go the traditional route with eggs, bacon, and pancakes, or, like me, you can totally skip cooking and still have a menu people will enjoy.

My five year old cousin gave me these beautiful flowers! I put them at the front door. Flowers add a really nice touch to any brunch.

Keeping It Real – I Was Tired!
Here’s the truth: I love hosting, but I don’t love exhausting myself in the process. After a busy week with family in town, and hosting everyone two days prior, I was ready for easy. I didn’t want to spend my Sunday morning covered in flour or flipping pancakes. I selfishly wanted to spend as much time with family as I could before they left town.
If you’ve ever hosted while tired, you know the feeling. That little voice in your head says, “Don’t plan it,” but your heart says, “You’ll regret missing this time.” My solution? Meet in the middle. I decided I wasn’t going to cook everything from scratch. I was going to outsource it. And let me tell you, it was the best decision ever.
Hosting doesn’t have to mean a three course, handmade meal. Sometimes it’s about creating an inviting space, setting the tone, and making sure people feel welcome. And yes, you can absolutely do that with store or restaurant bought food.

The Menu
Now let’s get into the fun part: the food.

Main Dish: Menudo
If you’ve never had menudo, let me introduce you to this absolute brunch lifesaver. Menudo is a traditional Mexican soup made with hominy, beef tripe, and a rich red chili broth. It’s hearty, flavorful, and often served as the ultimate comfort food (especially after a long night out). Some people even call it the ultimate hangover cure.
For my brunch, I didn’t make the menudo myself (again, too tired). Instead, I picked it up from a local restaurant that makes it fresh on the weekends. I bought about 8 large cups (not sure how many oz), then added them all to a large pot on my stove. I set the stove top to low heat to keep warm. Next to the Menudo pot, is a bowls, and a topping station. If you’re having menudo you absolutely NEED these toppings: lime wedges, diced onions, oregano packs, cilantro, and chili flakes. With how everything was set up, people helped themselves and came back for seconds or even thirds.
It was a hit. Everyone loved it. And the best part? No draining myself, no messy cleanup, just good food that felt homemade without me dirtying all my dishes. The most prep work was cutting the limes and dicing the onions.

Sweet Treats: Donuts
Every brunch needs something sweet, and donuts are the easiest way to check that box. They’re fun, colorful, and everyone finds a flavor they like.
I grabbed three dozen assorted donuts from Dunkin Donuts since it was just down the street. A quick tip: if you want to make donuts look extra special, stack them on a cake stand or arrange them by color. It instantly makes it look like you put more effort in than you actually did.
Between the savory warmth of the menudo and the sweet indulgence of donuts, the menu felt balanced and festive without being overwhelming.

The Drink Stations
Food is only half the battle. Drinks make a brunch come alive. Instead of stressing about serving everyone myself, I set up two simple drink stations and let people help themselves.
- Coffee Station: A no brainer. I set up a single serve Keuirg machine, K-Cups, sugar, powder creamer, and liquid creamer on a round table in the dining room. This allowed everyone to make their coffee exactly how they liked it.
- Mimosa Station: This was probably the biggest crowd pleaser. I put out special mimosa bottles, orange juice, and cranberry juice. Guests mixed and matched, making their own creations. It added a fun, interactive touch. You could also call it a juice station. I also had a freezer full of ice to keep drinks cool.
The beauty of stations is that they free you up. You’re not constantly refilling glasses or running back and forth to the kitchen. Guests love it because they get to customize their drinks, and you love it because it’s one less thing to worry about.

Note: Someone else brought the mimosa mix and I forgot to snap a picture of it. They brought 3 bottles of Soleil Mimosa, which turned out to be a huge hit. You can buy it here: https://fresh-mimosa.orderport.net/wines/Soleil-Mimosa
Setting the Table
Since we had a good sized group of about 16 people, I pushed two large tables together so everyone could sit together. There’s something about eating at one big table that makes everything feel warmer and more connected.
I opted to use a beige and white floral table cloth instead of keeping the table bare. I didn’t put up any extra decorations. My main focus was making sure everyone had a seat and that the vibe felt cozy. Sometimes, “good enough” is actually perfect.

The Vibe
Right away, people were chatting, sipping mimosas, laughing, and telling stories. The menudo was steaming, the donuts were disappearing fast, and my living room felt full of warmth and togetherness. In the background we played piano music from a Youtube playlist. Our air conditioner was blowing at max and everyone felt good.
It wasn’t about the food being homemade or the table being styled for Pinterest, it was about the people. We got to say our goodbyes slowly, over good food and drinks, instead of rushing in a hotel parking lot. I also snapped plenty of pictures, and those pictures are now some of my favorites from their visit.

Lessons & Takeaways for Readers
Here’s what I learned, and what you can take into your own hosting:
- You don’t have to cook everything. Store bought food is not “cheating.” It’s smart, especially when you’re tired or short on time.
- Stations make life easier. Coffee, juice, or cocktails, whatever you’re serving, let guests help themselves.
- Togetherness > perfection. Guests will always remember how they felt more than whether your sink had dirty dishes.
- Presentation is everything. Even simple food feels special if you display them nicely.
Bonus Tip: If someone offers to help, accept their help. It not only makes your life easier, but it helps build a bond between you and the person helping. For example, my Step Mom offered to come over in the morning and help out, so I said yes. Having an extra set of hands, even on an easy morning like this, made the brunch go by smoother. It also healed something in both of us to be together in the kitchen after we lost my dad(who loved to cook) almost 2 years ago. Long story short, accept help. If someone wants to bring drinks, let them! Let someone help until they show you they aren’t reliable.
Hosting Doesn’t Have to Drain You
My family brunch turned out to be one of the easiest, most memorable gatherings we’ve had. It was precisely because I didn’t overcomplicate things. Menudo from a local restaurant, fresh donuts, a few drink stations, and a cozy setup was all it took.
So, the next time you’re tempted to skip hosting because you don’t have the energy, remember this: people don’t come for the food, they come for the connection. And sometimes, the simplest setups make for the most special memories.
If you’re looking for a stress free way to host your own brunch, take it from me, you can absolutely pull it off without cooking all morning.
